Dear Governor Hochul,

I write as an Environmental Advocates NY supporter to urge you to protect New York’s drinking water from toxic PFAS. President Trump's administration is attempting to weaken federal limits on these “forever chemicals” in drinking water, which will leave millions of New Yorkers exposed to harmful contamination when they turn on the tap. Your leadership is needed to stop the Trump EPA from stripping away protections for our health.

Specifically, I ask that you direct the NYS Department of Health (DOH) to enact state regulations that will continue implementing the federal PFAS limits today. Enshrining these health-protective PFAS limits will insulate New York from a Trump rollback.

In May, President Trump's EPA announced that it planned to scrap Biden-era drinking water limits on four PFAS chemicals (PFNA, PFHxS, GenX, and PFBS) and delay limits on two other PFAS (PFOA and PFOS) by two years. These limits, a combination of Maximum Contaminant Levels and a Hazard Index, require water utilities to test for PFAS and to install additional treatment or find a new water source if they detect harmful levels of contamination.

The EPA’s rollback will harm New Yorkers’ health, plain and simple. Over 1.3 million New Yorkers exposed to PFOA and PFOS would have to unnecessarily wait two more years for cleaner water. Over a million other New Yorkers exposed to PFNA, PFHxS, GenX, and PFBS would be left with no protections against these toxic chemicals in their water. New Yorkers will bear the cost of this rollback through illnesses and even deaths linked to PFAS, and higher medical bills.

Fortunately, New York has the resources to get PFAS out of drinking water and keep water rates affordable. You have already provided hundreds of millions in state grants to remove PFOA and PFOS from drinking water. And thanks to historic investments in clean water in recent state budgets, resources will continue to be available to help utilities comply with these new protections in the years to come.

I appreciated your statement in May that the Trump administration’s rollback “puts New Yorkers' well-being and safety at risk.” New York can’t backtrack on drinking water protections. Please swiftly move forward with implementing strong, health-protective PFAS drinking water limits. Thank you for your consideration of this letter.
